Carol Dweck's Growth Mindset, Howard Gardner and film Director Sathyan Anthikad
While I cannot claim to be an encyclopedic authority on national and multiple other award winning Malayalam film director Shri Sathyan Anthikad but needless to say he continues to be one of Malayalees' all time favourite directors and story tellers.
He has a cult following among die hard Malayalees who appreciate his style of cinema which are simplicity and wit personified.
As you watch this episode on Film Companion with the director who has done 56 cinemas so far from 1982 onwards, one cannot but wonder and admire at the parallels between him and the traits of a Growth Mindset as elucidated by Dr. Carol Dweck in her breakthrough book called 'Mindset'.
I often talk about the insights from her work on Fixed Mindset vs Growth Mindset and as you watch this interview one realises that Shri Anthikad has the humility to continue learning even after all these years of accomplishments.
He continues to learn from and admire the good qualities of new generation Malayalam film directors and is open to experimentation with technologies like sync sound on real locations.
One also comes across a certain grace, wisdom and humility not to take the audience for granted in his work.
There is also an endearing simplicity of his craft shorn of any kind of gimmickry through computer generated special effects and the like.
What also stood out for me is the way he admires his fellow contributors of his craft be it actor, writer, scriptwriter, director Shri Sreenivasan; sound designer Anil Radhakrishnan; his own sons and Shri S. Kumar - the cinematographer of his ongoing hit film - Njan Prakashan (I am Prakashan).
In the Film Companion link above, you will also find Shri Anthikad demonstrating quite naturally, elements of the 5 Mindsets For the Future that Howard Gardner talks about in his book by the same name; especially the Respectful mindset as he talks about the migrant Bengali workers in Kerala - a group of people who've often been derided.
You will also find him demonstrating the other 4 mindsets - Discipline, Synthesis, Creativity and Ethics.
I resonate a lot with his style in the way I design my PPTs - minimalism in the slides (combined with stark contrasts and a no compromising approach to quality of pictures I select to use on my slides).
For those who do not know him outside the world of Malayalees, here's a list of his films over the last many decades - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sathyan_Anthikad
Looking forward to many more cult classics like Sandesham (Message), Oru Indian Pranayakatha (An Indian Love Story), Rasathanthram (Chemistry), Achuvinte Amma (Achu's Mother), Vinodayatra (Picnic), Kadha Thudarunu (The Story Continues) and more.
