What is the address of love?

Did Malayalam cinema writing peak and breakthrough new highs with this one? I am nearly two and half years behind in watching this movie since its release in February 2023. Of late I had been getting upset with the fact that most of the Malayalam films have become marketing and advertising vehicles for alcohol with one exception being Janamaithri . I have been quite concerned with the way alcoholism has been normalised in the movies. I thought this movie was boring and wanted to switch off but the only reason I stayed on was the strong recommendation from my friend Rajesh. And I was about to switch this film off when in the first twenty minutes or so, it was just about drinking, smoking and pedestrian stuff when the first unexpected twist in the tale happens and it catches you off guard and then makes you wonder how is the story going to proceed from here with more than an hour of the movie still left. In that part of the movie, the little cat’s two scenes and its expression truly capt...

Don’t watch Laal Singh Chaddha…

Should you watch Laal Singh Chaddha? My suggestion is: NO! … … … Not if you think you are supremely intelligent. Not if you think you are smart. Not if you think you have figured out the world. Not if you think you have figured out your place in the world, your purpose and destiny. Not if you are caught unawares or purposely in the bipolar world of right and wrong. Not if religious and political ideology is more important than the idea of humanity. Not if being right is more important than being wise and compassionate. Not if you hate Aamir Khan for whatever reasons including intellectual, ideological, religious and political because of the questions he has taken the risk to ask of us and ask for us. Not if you think that as a failure at the family level he shouldn’t do anything else. Not if you don’t like crying happy tears. Not if you think only the weak sissies cry. Not if your self-worth, self-importance and self-esteem depend on pulling other people down even though there maybe ma...

The coincidence dawned on me about 15-20 minutes into the film and I was very happy that I got my wife and daughter to watch this film on 8th March yesterday - the International Women’s Day. And what a film for me to rewatch in less than a week than this one. There are some films like Gandhi, 1942: A Love Story, Forrest Gump, Invictus, Jana Maitri, Laal Singh Chaddha, Vellimoonga, Sam Bahadur, 12th Fail and some more that I can watch any number of times. And to that list gets added this beautiful gem of a film by Kiran Rao - Laapata Ladies. What a writing, casting, directing, acting, dialogues, editing, music and subtle yet clear messaging with absolutely the perfect tadka of humour!! When I watched it the first time with my two friends last Saturday the 2nd of March, I was left so touched that I wanted to believe that reel life should turn into real life, just like I felt when I watched Forrest Gump for the first time in December 1995. And I have reason to believe that reel life can a...
